Fun with Funghi

Fun with fungi

Sitka spruce plantations maybe a cash crop and import, but this month my eyes have been opened to how much fun you can have with camera in hand. The fungi you get under the tight sheltered canopy is simply stunning in its shape and diversity. My initial intention was to try and capture many images showcasing this magnificent array of seasonal colour and shape. However I kept getting side tracked as I would find a suitably beautifully shaped specimen, start photographing it then I started to experiment a little and would get so engrossed that time ran out. My downfall was making a mistake on my very first attempt, I took an image and the camera moved, usually this would be instantly deleted as a blurry failure, but recently I met Ted Leeming, a fantastic landscape photographer who specialises in expressionist landscape images utilising slow shutter speeds. Inspired by this and liking my mistake I tried a similar philosophy on these magnificent mushrooms. I am undecided if I prefer my interpretation on the subject or if I should just stick with showcasing the subject sharply in all its glory. What I do know was it was all too much fun, and photographing these sensational blooms is something that will certainly now be regular feature of my autumnal photographic wish list.
Now the challenge is to find out what I have photographed.

I am away this month to compete in the Adventure Race World Championship 2009 for TEAM CRUACHAN, a 900km non stop 120 hour race, including trekking, mountain biking, kayaking, roller blading……the list is seemingly endless, and takes place in Portugal. I am very excited and completely terrified by this huge adventure but will have a camera along so will hopefully have a few images to showcase next month. If you fancy keeping up with the race there should be live coverage on the race website: www.arwc2009.com/en

There will be no experiences available for the first 3 weeks of November but vouchers will be issued as normal.

December will see me back chasing after unsuspecting local wildlife with images and stories to follow.
