Stories and pictures: Squirrel
madness
There I was up Ben Cruachan, in the snow, crampons on, with a death
grip on my axe and awkwardly moving around like some slug with a
limp. The height was not that great and the angle not that much.
There is just something about height and agility that for me does
not go very well together.
Later that week, I had my feet planted firmly on low level ground,
enviously watching squirrels who were poetry in motion. With none
of my silly clumsiness, they would effortlessly run along and leap
from branches at proportionally similar heights to what I was quaking
at. The grace, speed and sheer guts of their manoeuvres was awe
inspiring, if not a little needling.
By some bizarre coincidence the sun came out on one day during
my Squirrel shoot, a bit of a miracle considering the weather we
have been having over the last few weeks. So out went all my thoughts
of cute posed shots, and in came attempts at capturing this awesome
animal doing what it does best and leaping from tree to tree.
Unfortunately I had set up the hide for cutesy (see thumbnails on
right) and thus was too close for leaping (too close to fit the
entire squirrel in when in mid jump). However I did just about get
lucky with one shot, it does not do the squirrel justice so my mission
isn't over (which of course means more days in the field
real
shame) but it does give you an idea of why these animals are so
exciting to watch!
Hopefully if we ever get nice weather again I will manage a shot
that truly represents the acrobatic genius of our native gymnastic
masters.
