Stories and pictures:

Rejection on Mull during this years rut
The Stags role during the rut is to corral as many females as he can together and then mate whenever they come into season. This is pretty rare hence the more females the better chance of mating. Female hinds are a fickle bunch and I could almost feel the Stags frustration as he constantly tried to keep them together, sometimes succeeding and sometimes not. It was interesting as the harem number varied day to day, sometimes 6 to the most I saw 16. Apparently in England numbers can get up to 60, in Scotland the largest group I have worked with is 20 hinds.

Whenever the poor desperate fellow got of a whiff of an interest from a female, the tongue would lash out and off he charged, in the vain attempt of mating. You would think a big Stag, all muscle and booming roar would be more than a match for the ladies, but in two weeks I only saw one successful attempt.

The weather was horrendous and the Stags competition was pretty pathetic. The only vague challenger in two weeks, had one antler, never directly challenged the Stag and would sneak in attempting a quickie with the girls only when the big fellow was away corralling escaped females. So I have not managed the elusive fighting shot of wild Stags yet but I had an enormous amount of fun.

Yes at this time of year the stags are magnificent and very very entertaining, but the look of shock on a females face when a randy stag crept up on it had me in tears of laughter and was probably my highlight of the month (see main pic).

Till next month.
