Stories and pictures:

Love a Hoodie

Hooded Crows, pests, a nuisance, vermin! It is a real shame that some reckon those are the best descriptions for these extremely intelligent, interesting and elegant animals. Crows intelligence is their downfall in many cases as they are extremely inquisitive and very good at finding an easy meal which often leads them into places humans would rather they weren't. However there is a very tender side to the Hooded Crow. Crows mate for life, Crows also have very close family units. Not only do they mate for life the couples hang out together and help each other find food, and share food. I have watched this behaviour all from Oban's waterfront. The intelligence is never more obvious than when witnessing the Crow lifting and dropping muscles and cockles to crack them open for the delicious treat inside. The fact this can take up to 7 goes, means there is a clear tool using thought process behind the action. Just as fascinating as apes and ants!

This is just the beginning of my project with these inspiring animals. I hope to bring you more over the next few months.

Till next month.
