Stories and pictures: A Surprising Tern
of events
Sometimes you plan and plan for shots, and sometime more rarely
they just happen. This was a little of both. I had spent an afternoon
doing some reconnaissance of a tern colony, staying out of camera
range and just observing the behaviour of the animals. I wanted
to see if it would be possible to get clients within camera range
without disturbing the breeding colony. The colony was on an island
just of the mainland, but the terns flight path did occasionally
come over a spot where a person could sit without disturbing the
birds.
The weather was pretty crummy so once I had learnt what I needed,
I meandered back to my van. Round the corner of the bay I stumbled
across an awesome spectacle. At low tide a huge number of terns
were feeding right by the waters edge, diving in the water and catching
wee fish.
I approached and was completely ignored by the birds, which is
certainly not the reaction you get when near the breeding colony.
I spent a glorious couple of hours photographing them, the weather
was no good so I experimented with some slow shutter speed and more
abstract work.
While running the flight masterclass, I was so excited about my
discovery. All day I was telling them at low tide they were in for
such a treat, something that would blow their minds, telling them
they were bound to get some incredible pictures of flight, explaining
how easy it would all be. On and on I went about it so inevitably
when the tide finally shifted of course note a hint of a feather,
and since that one time I have never seen them fish there again.
Were the clients disappointed? Thankfully not as nature will always
reward patience and because we had waited there for so long in anticipation
of the feeding frenzy at low tide, we witnessed an awesome spectacle,
a peregrine falcon smashing into the tern colony at light speed
from the local cliffs. Incredible! Even more surprising was the
fact that someone did get a picture of it, which can be seen in
this months guest gallery.
Till next month.
