In the deep mid winter...
The weather was cold, very cold. A deep layer of freezing
fog cloaked the loch. I rarely go out and 'shoot from the hip' as
the results are usually pretty average, but the conditions were
just too amazing not to try.

I went out armed with a 150mm lens to try and capture wildlife
in their environment. Whilst doing this I witnessed the most amazing
darwinian moment. The ground has been frozen here now for a few
weeks and birds are getting desperate. Some birds migrate, some
die, and some evolve. I witnessed the evolution

a very smart little robin took to the shallows of the loch for
a spot of fishing! The Robin waded out in to the loch and would
pause just like a dipper or heron looking for movement, then in
a flurry of activity it would dive down and pluck the unlucky worm
from the depths of what the worm must have assumed was a fairly
safe haven.

I call it darwinian as it was very similar behaviour to a dipper
which is a relative of our plucky robin. You can clearly see how
adverse conditions can cause animals to evolve and devolp, and you
can see that if it works why not stick with it and develop things
that help you more in that environment.

Of course I had the completely wrong lens for capturing this type
of action but thought the story was worth showing the images I did
get.

Merry Christmas to you all and I hope you have time to have some
wildlife Christmas adventures yourselves. Remember to upload any
wintry images to our facebook page if you wish to share them with
us and others.
