Goat on Mull
News

And then there was none...

Mull took up most of March with mixed success. One of the joys of wildlife photography and one of the pains of it is that you just never know what is going to happen. I had prepared a hide with some geese decoys.

The first couple of times the geese came in superbly but by the time the clients were there the geese had changed their minds completely and gone somewhere else.

Goats were the next target and again during the week no problem but when clients came I could smell them but not see them!

Goats are one of the most charismatic looking wild animals on the planet. They often come down to beaches to munch on sea weed left behind at low tide. It was while researching this for the Mull Weekend that I got some of my best pictures.

However the truly wonderful thing about wildlife is that if one subject does not work it usually means, so long as you put the work in, you will get lucky with another. Mull was no exception and we had some truly memorable moments including; a close encounter with three juvenile sea eagles, finding ourselves metres away from an otter, watching seals breaching and playing and our usual stars performed brilliantly. Pictures from the trip will be published next month. Thanks again to Arle Lodge for a fabulous base and accommodation.

On one of the days when preparing, I had a photography competition prize-winner with me, who took some great pictures which will also be on the gallery next month. We had hoped to see an otter and just before he left the island one popped up as we were saying good bye at the Lodge. He, his wife and I all ran down to see if we could get closer, unfortunately it stayed just out of camera range but was a joy to behold.

While I was waiting though a few shags flew past. Shags area real throw back to the land of the dinosaurs and a superbly accomplished fisherman. This Shag was a little too far a way so I tried slowing the shutter speed down to create something a little more interesting. The result for me is just as interesting as a full frame otter shot.

Wildlife is simply fantastic.

I am very excited as next month's story as I will be introducing my rather hairy new business partner. Watch this space…
