Puffins 19th & 20th June
What a great time of year for Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills and
Shags.
Thousands of Puffins feeding young, but my highlight was seeing
the common Guillemots with fish in mouth perched on the precarious
rocks feeding there fluffy chicks.
On the way out we were treated to a magnificent viewing of two
basking sharks.
I find this trip pretty emotional as getting so close to such an
array of wildlife is the a huge privelage, thank you to our great
group for adding to the enjoyment.
Puffins 24th & 25th July
I had left this trip a bit later in the year so we had a better
chance of seeing puffins feeding and also you get better views of
basking sharks at the end of July.
Well we were not dissapointed, this is probably the one of the
most luckiest and spectacular wildlife photography trips I have
ever run. Word of warning this does not happen every time!
We left Oban harbour and encountered a huge flock of Manx Shearwaters
which flew right next to the boat, a sight which is breath taking
as we were hitting 30 knots and the birds were hardly even flapping
wings.
Then we watched in utter awe as a Sea Eagle plucked a sea bird
out the air. Seeing this huge bird of prey hunting is astoundingly
rare (most of the time they are baited for sightings of them hunting).
Then we had 20 minutes with porpoises, again this has never happened
to me before as usually when a boat approaches they swim away.
To finish the boat trip of we saw 15 basking sharks, some very
close up and all this before the puffins!
Then on the island were more puffins than I had ever seen there
before. On the way back not a lot was seen as everyone was fast
asleep!
